How Large is the Universe?

The universe has long captivated us with its immense scales of distance and time. How far does it stretch? Where does it end and what lies beyond its star fields and streams of galaxies extending as far as telescopes can see? These questions are beginning to yield to a series of extraordinary new lines of investigation and technologies that are letting us to peer into the most distant realms of the cosmosBut also at the behavior of matter and energy on the smallest of scales. The mind-blowing answer comes from a theory describing the birth of the universe in the first instant of time.

    @CiachoLover Sorry …
@CiachoLover Sorry to say but it’s clearly a foolish thought that some human (god) could create this. I respect that you believe in a higher power but you believing that he is the creator is frankly dumb.

    you ask were god …
you ask were god was when He made all this. The Bible say to avoid foolish Queisons. But if you know then just tell me>

    “Because it …
    “Because it happened. ”
How do you know? You don’t. You’re just making it up.

    Without the …
Without the universe what purpose is God.

    You seem honest, …
You seem honest, and willing to fight against known science for your faith. I respect that. However, to be frank, your lack of understanding of the merits of Science, sadly; is also reflected in your lack of understanding of your own Religon. I advise you to try to open your mind, and figure out how the universe actually works.

  7. CiachoLover says:

    “What makes you …
“What makes you think that this kind of creation is even possible”

    Because it happened.

  8. CiachoLover says:

    I don’t know why …
I don’t know why it’s so hard for you to accept that God doesn’t need anything to create out of nothing. That’s what makes Him God, not merely a powerful creature bound by the laws of the universe. He creates laws of physics and energy, time, space, and whatever we still haven’t observed. He’s God (creator), the first cause, not some part of a universe (creation) bound by its laws. Without God, the universe has no reason or purpose.

  9. mrbluesky323 says:

    “Create” means …
“Create” means something out of nothing, ”
What makes you think that this kind of creation is even possible (let alone that it happened….(let alone that it’s necessary))?

Furthermore, if nothing existed before “god” created the universe, then god is nothing or god did not exist. “Doing” anything requires energy. If god didn’t use energy, he didn’t do anything. If god did use energy, he too is subject to the conservation of energy law.

  11. Stickspert says:

    How do you make …
How do you make nothing from nothing and something from nothing? because first you needed *nothing* or *space* to make something and then make something from *space*

  12. CiachoLover says:

    “Create” means …
“Create” means something out of nothing, bringing something into existence without any need for building blocks. The sun takes existing matter and energy and transforms them into different states (law of conservation of energy) through nuclear fusion. That’s not creation, it’s transformation according to already existing rules. So who made the rules and why? Or where they always in existence (uncreated rules)?

    Look at ourselves …
Look at ourselves at a cellular level. Our only purpose is to sequester nutrients, just like any other life form. But for whom?

  18. mrbluesky323 says:

    My protons and …
My protons and energy are eternal (as far as we can tell). So, in a sense, I am eternal and in another sense (the specific organization of those protons and energies), I am not.

What exactly do you mean when you say “create”? The sun “creates” carbon atoms and helium atoms. Is the sun a creator? If the sun is a creator, could a sun be what god is?
If the sun could be what god is, why are you worshiping a sun?

  23. CiachoLover says:

    Reread your reply, …
Reread your reply, because actually you’re saying that the universe is the creator (uncreated). OTOH, in the absence of God, if the uncreated universe isn’t a creator, all that exists must also be uncreated and therefore eternal. Are you eternal?

  24. chain8899 says:

    Nah, the early …
Nah, the early Christians existed during the golden ages when rome was still in power. Rome was known for highly encouraging science/education with its free institutions. Christians at the time were fundamentalist and believe opposite to everything rome stand for. They had to be radical extremist inorder to promote change in the iron grips of rome.

  25. MachiLikesRed says:

    Actually, Religion …
Actually, Religion was originally what LED us to question things. Take Christianity. The really early christians spent a lot of their time studying science. The way they saw it, understanding the complexities of the world was a way of being aware of God’s power. So they tried to study gravity and the weather and all sorts of things. It wasn’t until the middle ages, when the church got power hungry, that they made up the whole “there is no science, God did it,” explanation.
